The constitution and the Bill of Rights were hardly separable to begin with. The amendments came within only a few short years of the US constitution's inception. Aus has had a constitution for long over a century now that is yet to be amended to suit the Australian people's prejudices. Now, to be fair, the US are a whole other culture, and crime rates vary even state to state. You may probably find that some US states have LESS homicide rates than Australian states per 100,000 people.

I think you were referring to the right to bear arms, which is the second ammendment to the US constitution and it forms part of the Bill of Rights. I wasn't comparing the total number of crimes committed in the US with Aus, but rather the crime rate per 100,000 people. So these rates take into account the differing populations between the two countries, and the crimes rates i mentioned are higher in the US than in Australia. Anyway, my point was just that weaker gun laws won't fix our problems

Yes, we have a constitution, but it's nothing like the US constitution. I never mentioned a Bill of Rights. Now, I think you're forgetting that the US population is 15 times that of Australia's. More population could only mean one thing: higher rates of everything. A-doi.

I'm Australian and whilst I like the idea of us having a bill of rights (we already have a constitution), one needs only look at US history to realise that having a bill of rights doesn't always protect citizens from crime and discrimination. And I don't think that there is any evidence to suggest that "the right to bear arms" results in a safer society: the US has higher homicide, gun violence, and rape rates than Australia (which has very strict gun laws).
